Filming better vacation videos




1. Film your family getting ready before the trip begins. Record your family waking up on the big day, scurrying around looking for last minute items, and trying to find the tickets. It'll provide a great start for your movie, and people who watch your video will have instant insight into your life when they see how each of your family members gets ready to head out on vacation.

2. Don't worry about editing while you're filming. With a digital video camera, it's easy to import your video onto your computer and then edit it with Windows Movie Maker (included free with Windows XP). Because you can edit out the boring moments, you can film long sequences to ensure that you get the shot you want. In fact, you should pad each scene with one or two seconds of extra footage at the beginning and end of each shot. Having extra footage at the end of a scene allows you to fade gradually into the next scene. For example, if you're filming your buddy's hole-in-one, don't turn the camera off as soon as the ball sinks into the hole. Instead, film the hole for several seconds after the ball is no longer visible. Later, when you edit, you can use that extra time to transition to the following scene (which will probably be your buddy dancing around).
