Sony Vegas Video Editing - Exporting your video for DVD authoring

This tutorial will explain how to export your video for DVD authoring. You will need two software's by Sony. Sony Vegas, and Sony DVD Architect.
1. Open your project file in Sony Vegas. Once you have it loaded, on the timeline you will see this grey bar underneath the time with two arrows on both sides. This bar is used to select the part in the video that you will want to export. If you can find this bar, click anywhere within the timeline and press zero on the number pad. You will see it appear on the timeline under the time. Drag the arrows accordingly.
2. Next hold ctrl and press the letter "m" on the keyboard. A window will appear, select the name and folder in which you will want to save it in. In the format drop down box, select the format MPEG-2, then underneath, you'll see the template selection drop down box. Select DVD NTSC. Hit save.
3. Once your video has been exported, open Sony DVD architect and drag the video clip into the window that has a Menu item in it. It is on the top left corner of the screen. Once you are in DVD architect, you can now create menus, play buttons, and chapter selections.

How to convert from MiniDV to DVD
Converting from MiniDV to DVD
Many people have asked me how to convert a MiniDV tape to DVD. There are many different ways of achieving this. I'm going to show you the way I do this. The following are items that you'll need:
1. MiniDV camcorder with 1394 (firewire connection)
2. Computer with Nero installed with about 20GB of free space and a DVD writer
3. Firewire connection
4. Sony DVD Architect
5. Sony Vegas Video Editor
The objective is to first capture the footage into the computer's hard drive. Then convert it into MPEG-2. Aftewards create the DVD folders and use nero to burn them onto the disc.
1. To capture the footage from the tape, connect the firewire with the camcorder, into the computer. Open Sony Vegas. Go to File->Capture video. Select DV press OK. Another window will pop up. Select Options->preferences. Select the disc management tab. Double click on the drive that you want to save your video in. Press OK and press Capture Video. Usually about 12GB/ hour of footage.
2. Once the entire tape has been captured. Drag and drop the video onto the Vegas Video Editor. The audio file will start building, I will cancel building of the audio levels at the bottom left corner of the software.
3. Export the video by holding ctr and pressing M on the key board. Under "save file type" select Main Concept MPEG-2. Under template select DVD NTSC for north american DVDs. Select save. It will take about 4.3GB / 1:30hrs of video. Note: You'll have to output it to two discs if its over 1:30hrs. You can fit everything onto one disc if you use another free program called DVD Shrink to compress it. By fitting everything onto one disc, export the file as explained above, then open DVD Shrink and compress the video with that software, the quality won't be as clear though.
4. Once you have compressed the video into MPEG-2, it is now time to make the DVD folder called video_ts. Open DVD Sony Architect. Drag the new MPEG-2 video into top left corner box where you see an item called Menu. Once the video is in there, select menu and press delete on the key board. That way, your video will play automatically once you place it into the DVD player. At the top select the Make DVD item. Select prepare, browse for a folder where you want to save your video and audio folders that DVD Architect will be creating. Select next until you see finish, press the finish key. Once its done open Nero.
5. To burn the video_ts folders that Architect has produced for you, open the program Nero. Select DVD video. Select the label tab and name your DVD. Press OK. Find your video_ts folder and open it. Drag all the contents into the burning window. Insert a DVD. Select the burn button located on the top where it has an image of a match and a CD. Select your burning speed. I normally burn at 8X. Check the simulation diaologue box if this is your first time burning a DVD. Press the Burn button. Once its done, test it on your DVD player!
Hopefully this tutorial has helped, we can also do this at Azure Production where we use DVD recorders to copy video onto DVDs.

MiniDV won't play
Why does my MiniDV not play on my camcorder?
If you have a MiniDV tape that was recorded, in HD and you placed it into your camcorder that records standard 720X480 resolution, then the camcorder will let you know that you need a compatible camcorder has HD capabilities. On older units, you will see the counter move as you rewind/fast forward and play, but you will see no picture.
Another reason why your MiniDV isn't playing its because it was filmed in another video system for example PAL/NTSC/SECAM and your camcorder cannot recognize that format. You can rent, purchase or take it to a video transferring house and they will be able to transfer the video system into another system.
If you see images that look corrupted or distorted when playing back the MiniDV, your camcorder unit may need head cleaning. You can purchase a head cleaning tape or if it is severe, you can take it to a specialist and have them actually take out the head or even replace it with a new one.
I've also ran into problems where a particular camcorder will play a certain tape and won't work on another unit. A good example was when I had a canon camcorder and I captured video with a panasonic unit. The images came out distorted and the audio was choppy. In this case either purchase/rent another camera that can play the tape. You can also take it to the video transferring house
Hopefully these tips will help. Keep on playing!Labels: minidv problems troubleshooting playback camcorder dv ntsc pal secam hd video movie
Converting VHS to DVD
Many people today have tons of VHS tapes stored in their closets. Did you know that the more you view, rewind and fast forward the VHS tapes, the tape wears down and also puts stress on your VHS machine and eventually you'll have to change the heads? Its similar to when you take a piece of sand paper and rub it against your hand. When the tape passes through the heads in the VHS machine, the head needs to touch the magnetic tape in order to view the information stored in it. That is why over time, if the heads continue to rub the tape, the more worn the tape and heads become.
DVDs on the other hand are read in a different way. Through a laser. Instead of magnetic technology, the disc is burned with digital information decrypted into 0s and 1s. This information is burned onto the disc creating an uneven surface below the plastic naked to the human eye. When the laser detects a low area or a high area, the laser reads the information accordingly. The laser does not physically touch the disc and no rubbing is occur thus that is why DVDs if stored and kept well, tend to last longer over time when compared to analogue technology.
